It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, George M. Jones, age 87, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, surrounded by his family at MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney.

Born on March 16, 1936, and raised in Whitney Pier, George was the son of the late Sidney and Amelia (Whalen) Jones. George is the last surviving member of his immediate family.

George is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Edith Mae (Skinner) Jones; sons, George (Sandra), and Chris; daughter, Linda (Randy) Knott; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his sisters, Geraldine Jones, Doriel Jones, Erma Maxwell, Melda Delorenzo, and Easter Mae Campbell.

George worked for Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 35 years. He played softball in Sydney and Glace Bay and loved watching his two favourite teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. George was a stay home dad and was a member of the United Heritage Church in Sydney.

The family would like to thank the staff at the MacGillivray Guest Home for their generosity and compassion during George’s short stay.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation for the late George Jones. A graveside service will be held in the spring. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of George may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association, MacGillivray Guest Home or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
