Whitney Pier

With heavy hearts we, the family are sorry to share that Garfield Augustus Moe, age 92, of Sydney, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, in the Glace Bay General Hospital (4 North), surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Sydney, Garfield was the son of the late Preston and Dorothy (Bramah) Moe.

Garfield dedicated 38 years of his life to the Sydney Steel Corporation before retiring. His passion for his West Indian cooking, put him on a lifelong road to mastering his mother’s recipes, and the perfect fish cakes and pudding and souse.

Garfield is survived by his loving wife, Louise (Eddy) Moe, and children, Danita, Dorothy, Louie, Mona (Wally), Garfield, Marion (John), Darlene, and Carl. Garfield ‘Poppy’ was a much-loved grandfather of Bria, Tyrique, Trinity, Chelsey, Ashley, Chase, Troy, Todd, Jeffrey, Brianne, Elissa, Theo, and Cory. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerome ‘Gee’ (Patricia), Grenfell ‘Babes’ (Geogina), and Gerald (the late Paula); special in-laws, Beverly (Edward) and Barbara (Wayne); special niece, Dena and goddaughter, Shelly. In addition to his family, Garfield leaves behind his special girls, Vivian, Tracey and Leslie; many nieces and nephews, and many good friends who will forever remember his sharp sense of humour and friendship.

Besides his parents, Garfield was predeceased by his children, Jody and Jerome; grandchild, Dominique; sister, Lou Walcott (nee Moe); special friend, Greta Paris and best friend, Ethelston Lucas.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and dedicated angel staff at Glace Bay General Hospital (4 North) for their compassionate care and support during Garfield’s time there. There are way too many of them to name, but they are a credit to their profession.

Visitation for the late Garfield Moe will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, January 12, 2024, from 5-8 p.m. and from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home in the All Faith Chapel on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Garfield may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
