Florence
It is with great sadness and deep regret that we, the family announce the death of Joan Patricia Young, age 77, on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Joan was predeceased by her parents and brother, Allan.
Joan is survived by her brother, Ricky; nieces, Heather and Miranda and nephew, Andrew.
Joan not only travelled the world but lived it. She grew up in Whitney Pier but after a brief but boring stint at nursing in Glace Bay, she left to attend St. Mary’s University where she obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. Following her instincts and restless nature she then undertook articling in Toronto under Touche Ross and thence to Ottawa and Calgary… It was in Calgary where she joined Air Canada, not only to give them a breath of fresh air but to follow her passion of travelling the world.
Joan was a fine, generous and classy lady who loved sharing a glass of wine with close friends. She touched many a heart and those left to grieve include her dear friend and partner, Joe Carey who demonstrated exemplary kindness and caring towards Joan during their time together; her lifelong childhood friend, Patricia will dearly miss their daily chats.
Her spirit and love of life was evident in all that Joan did and highlighted by her immense pleasure in dancing and music.
Joan lived life on her own terms but in those terms, she found room for kindness and generosity and a deep love for her friends. Her friends shared in her journey and her immense joy of life.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Joan Young will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Friday, October 7, 2022. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will take place in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Red Cross or Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
