With broken hearts and loving memories, we, the family, regret to announce the passing of Gertie on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney at the age of 95.

Born on January 9, 1927, in Sydney, Gertie was the daughter of the late Matthew and Isabel (Brophy) Kiely.

Gertie is survived by her brother, Patrick (late Marie Sampson) Kiely, Fredericton, NB; nieces, Rose (Peter) Hanna, Elizabeth (John) MacNamara, Sharon (John) Barron, Elaine (Joe) Zamit, all of Sydney, Patricia (Alex MacLellan) Connoly, Florida, and Jaime (Robert) Esterbrook, French Lake, NB; nephews, Gerald (Yvonne) Flannigan, Malcolm (Vesta) Campbell, Paul (Eddie) Campbell, Brian (Mary) Campbell, Thomas (Shaun Hemmings) Campbell, all of Sydney, Bruce (Debra Clarke), Halifax; special grand-nephew, Sean (Kelly Dean) Flannigan; as well as many other grand-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Gertie was predeceased by her husband of 57 years and the love of her life, Samuel Archibald ‘Archie’ Spencer; sisters, Mary (John) Flannigan, Rose (Malcolm) Campbell; brother, Francis in infancy and a niece, Rosanna Campbell in infancy.

Visitation for the late Gertie Spencer will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Monday, September 5, 2022, from 6-9 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of Gertrude may be made to Holy Redeemer Building Fund or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
