Sydney

It is with profound sadness that we, the family announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, John Francis ‘Miggits’ Madinsky on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at home, surrounded by his loving family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born on March 24, 1935, in Sydney, John was a son of the late Dimitri and Frances Madinsky.

John had a lifelong passion for hockey which included the time he spent playing nets for North Sydney, Glace Bay and Corner Brook senior hockey. He loved and we really mean loved the Montreal Canadians.

John enjoyed 35 years of golf with the same group of friends. Whenever anyone asked him if he was any good, he would just grin (he wasn’t). It was the comradery he enjoyed the most. Before he retired John was employed for 35 years as an electrician with Sydney Steel.

John never missed an opportunity to enjoy the many family gatherings, especially Christmas. He loved the chaos and laughter when his house was filled with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The true measure of a man’s wealth is his capacity to give love and receive love and John was a very rich man.

Left to mourn John are his wife of 65 years, Hilda; sons, John (Karen), Wayne (Janet) and Mark (Laurie); daughter, Sandra; grandchildren, Christopher, Danielle (David), Katie (Liam), Royce, Evan, Chelsea and Emily; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Wesley, Reese, and Dylan; step-granddaughter, Erin and her children, Amber, Chance and MacKenzie; sister, Frances; niece, Judy and sister-in-law, Inez and her children, Bernice, Francis and Chrisanna.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Donald and sister, Mary.

We, the family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the tremendous team of doctors and nurses at the palliative care unit, your support and guidance allowed us to grant John’s final wish to come home. Thank you!

Memorial service to celebrate the life of John Madinsky will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, October 3, 2022, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, at a later date.

Donations in memory of John may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

We never left the house without him saying either “safe travels” or “don’t say bye say so long”. So Grandpa, safe travels, this is not good-bye, this is so long until we meet again.
