Catalone

Our hearts are filled with sadness and love as we share the news of the passing of Gordon William Cameron ‘Billy’ on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, Glace Bay, surrounded by the love of his family.

Billy resided in Catalone with his loving wife of 47 years, Arlene (MacKinnon). He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for over 35 years until retirement (Municipal Ready-Mix and JonelJim Construction).

Billy was a jack of all trades, he enjoyed making furniture, riding his motorbike, driving his antique truck, fishing, darts, roller skating, baseball, bowling, going to the movies and spending endless hours in his garage. He volunteered with the Catalone Recreation Centre over the years alongside friends and family. Billy’s smile and mischievous ways brought light to many occasions and family gatherings.

Billy will be forever remembered by his wife Arlene; son, Christopher (Tracy); daughter, Melisssa (Trevor); his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Brinley and Beckett ‘the critters’ and foster son, Stewart; siblings, Diane Spencer (Barry), Patsy MacLeod-Savoie (Ben), Phyliss Butts (Lowell), Tony Cameron (Loriann), Darlene Kaiser (Nelson) and Bruce Cameron (Angela); aunt, Joan MacKay (John Allan); father-in-law, John L. MacKinnon; sisters-in-law, Kathy Burke (Robert), Colleen Hussey (Gary), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Billy was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Carmel; brothers, Irving and Michael Allan; mother-in-law, Jeannie; several aunts and uncles and his close friend, Patty Fitz.

We would like to thank the staff and sitters at Cape Regional Hospital, and the compassionate team at Glace Bay General, especially those who supported us as he passed. During Billy’s sickness, he and Arlene were supported by medical staff including Dr. Venkata Puppala, Dr. Ken Rockwood, Dr. Arlene Kelly-Wiggins, Dr. Malcolm Zhorg Shan Tan and Dr. Jeannie Ferguson. Although during the last few years they were faced with medical challenges, Arlene showed unconditional love and support for Billy.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Billy Cameron will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, October 3, 2022. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Emily Duggan officiating.
