It is with broken hearts, the family of Shirley Penticost, are sad to announce her sudden passing on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at home in Sydney, at the age of 70.

Born in Sydney on June 21, 1951, Shirley was the daughter of the late John and Theresa Sutherland.

Shirley was employed at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for 30 years until her retirement in 2016. She loved to travel to Ontario and visit her children and especially her grandchildren whom she adored. Shirley had the biggest heart and would do anything for anyone at any given time.

Shirley is survived by her children, Dean (Cheryl), Scott, Shauna (Chris) and Cheryl (Brian); siblings, Barbara, George (Sharon) and Elizabeth (Bill); sisters-in-law, Shella and Betty; grandchildren, Brandon, Mackenzie, Madison, Brianna, Emmett, Shelby and AJ; great-granddaughter, Sophia; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, whom she loved.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her long-time partner, Junior Wells; brothers, Leo, Joe and Gordon; brother-in-law, Roy and sister-in-law, Edna.

There will be no visitation for the late Shirley Penticost. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Private family interment will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Johnstown at a later date.

Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
