Sydney,

It is with deep sadness and appreciation for a long life well lived, that we, the family announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, Daniel William Muldoon ‘Buck’, on Friday, January 21, 2022, at home, where he lived with his daughter, Shauna and his son-in-law, Kirk Morrison.

Born on November 19, 1925, in Glace Bay, Buck was the son of the late Harry and Mary Muldoon (Devereaux).

As a young man, he worked at the Sydney Steel Plant prior to enlisting to serve his country during WWII, as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy, serving much of his active-duty time in the North Atlantic. After the war, Buck joined the Naval Firefighting Service before transitioning to a career as a firefighter with the Sydney Fire Department. After 35 years of service, he retired from the Sydney Fire Department in 1990, as Deputy Fire Chief.

Buck was a loving and devoted husband and father. He met the love of his life, our beloved mother, Shirley, after he was introduced to the young nursing student by his sisters. Buck was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed nature, hunting, and fishing.

Upon retirement, Buck remained very active in the community and was a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 138 and the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. He continued to enjoy fishing for mackerel with his many fishing buddies well into his eighties. Buck very much enjoyed spending time in Boisdale with family and Crosby, his beloved grand dog. Dad’s highlight of the week was cooking Sunday family dinners, especially those dinners where his granddaughter, Sarah was present.

Buck is survived by his devoted children, Maureen (Rob) MacNeil, Dan (Deborah), Shauna (Kirk) Morrison; grandchildren, Ryan Muldoon, Sarah Muldoon, Matthew MacNeil, Mark (Hillary) MacNeil, and great granddaughter, Evaline. He is also survived by sisters, Rita, Boston and Patsy, Edmonton.

Besides his parents, Buck was predeceased by his wife, Shirley; sisters, Catherine, Sr. Barbara, Mary, Colleen, Margaret, and brother, Harry.

Dad we will greatly miss your kind and loving presence in our lives. In our hearts, you were a giant of a man, deeply religious and faithfully committed to your catholic faith. During your long life you served your country and community, and we will find comfort knowing that you made a difference and were part of the greatest generation. After almost 35 years apart, we are pleased that you will finally be reunited with mom. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

We want to thank the VON and Palliative care nurses, doctors and dad’s caregivers who were compassionate and always available during his final weeks. Thanks to Veteran Affairs for all you did to provide care resources, comfort, and support. Dad never wanted to leave his home and thanks to you, he was able to be at home until the end.

There will be no visitation for the late Daniel ‘Buck’ Muldoon. Due to Covid restrictions, a private family Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at a later date.

Due to the Mass being private, a Live Streaming link will be available on our website.

Online Condolences

My deepest condolences to Mauren Danny &Shaunna on the passing of your Dad. He was a great neighbor and friend to all of us on the Hill. He was especially good to Kenny after the loss of his Dad. Took him him everywhere. I remember I asked Kenny where you today. He piped up and said I was to see the old man..That’s what your Dad called your Papa. I said you cannot call him that. Kenny said back that is what Bucky calls him. Great memories.

Condolences to all the Family members @ this sad time. We can easily say o’well Buck lived a long good life @ 96. Buck was many things to many people & family. He was meant to live that long after losing his wife Shirley @ a very young age. He had to raise their family by himself @ that time & lead by example so they would grow up to be responsible adults. Knowing my nephew & nieces from that time up to now, Buck certainly did a great job & Shirley was watching out to guide the family because of her absent in living life. Buck was everything, a great son, brother, husband , father , grandfather, great grandfather, friend to all that pass through Bucks 96 years off life. He was a big man in stature & his heart was twice as big. I am so happy to call Buck my brother in law. Go rest high on that mountain with your beloved wife Shirley , your work here on earth is done. RIP Buck

We are very sorry to hear of your loss, while we didn’t have the pleasure to have met Buck, he’s a bigger than life character as I know him through the many fun stories Dan has shared over the years. From his 90th birthday thinking he should look for a new truck (with a 10 year warranty no doubt) or at 92 thinking someone should get his gun fixed for him. Estelle’s grandfather and Buck’s dad were great friends, making the link to the Muldoon family now a century. With a family like you all, he has left a great mark and will be missed dearly we’re sure.
Sincerely Estelle and Rick J

Maureen, Shauna, Danny and families, So sorry for your loss. There were lots of great Buck stories shared over the years that will continue to bring joy into your lives as they are retold over family gatherings…especially the ones including barbecues and fire pits. Keeping you in our prayers.

Maureen and family. Sorry to hear passing of your dad, Grampy. Sounds like he was one heck of a guy surviving two of the toughest jobs on the planet, wartime service with the Royal Canadian Navy and Sydney Steel. 96 is one heck of a long “watch” but I know that does not diminish the loss of your dad. As you point out so lovingly, he is now reunited with your mom after a long and successful “Trick at the Helm”.. Condolences and love to your family. Gerry
