It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence MacLean on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  

Born on December 22, 1924 in Tarbotvale, Lawrence was the son of the late Merdina (MacLean) MacNeil.

Lawrence was a veteran with the Canadian military and later worked as an auto mechanic for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 128, Whitney Pier. Being just shy of his 92 birthday, Lawrence was always on the go and kept busy doing many small and large projects. He will be remembered by family and friends for being kind and enjoying life to the fullest.

Lawrence leaves behind his companion of 46 years, Joan Agnew; children, Lennus (Debbie) MacLean, Alberta, Alan (Linda) MacLean, B.C. and Kim MacLean, Skir Dhu; granddaughter, Samantha and one great-grandson. He is also survived by step-children, Robert (Shelley) Agnew, Sandy (Linda) Agnew, Dave (Cathy) Agnew and Mary Lynn (Barney) Gale; 13 step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and the mother of his children, Nora MacLean.

Besides his mother, Lawrence was predeceased by his step-father, Thomas MacNeil and son, Derrick MacLean.

Visitation for the late Lawrence MacLean will be held today (December 14) from 7-9 p.m. at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) and on Thursday, December 15, 2016 from 1-2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge. Funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge, with Rev. Corrie Stewart officiating. Interment will take place in Pine Hill Cemetery, River Bennett. Following the burial a light reception will be held in the lower level of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge.

Donations in memory of Lawrence may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Pine Hill Cemetery or charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
