It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Lois Marie St. John, 87, of Whitney Pier, on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Lois was the daughter of the late Peter and Alice (Healey) Hawco.

Family was everything to Lois. She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish with lots of volunteer hours with the women’s auxiliary. She had a gift of being a great story teller.  Lois loved spending time with her grandchildren and extended family members. She was a pet lover and enjoyed bowling, baking, knitting, crocheting, travelling and most of all, loved her Toronto Blue Jays. Lois will be remembered by family and friends being very witty, determined and most of all, independent.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Lois is survived by her children, Donna (John Eagles), Glace Bay, Raylene (Peter MacInnis), Truro, Michael (Cheryl), Sydney, Gerry (Norma), Ont., and Kelly, at home; grandchildren, Tracey (Trevor), Lisa, Melissa (Craig), Cheryl (Corey), Troy (Jenny), Justin and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Tori, Carter, Lucy and Alexander; great-great-grandchildren, Shane, Jordan and extended family members, Megan and Matthew.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law and best friend, Theresa Hawco; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Lois was predeceased by her husband, James Michael St. John in 1987; sisters, Chlora, Rita, Chris, Kaye, Pauline and brothers, Sandy and Bill.

Visitation for the late Lois Marie St. John will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, March 31, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Apr.1, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass, reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, at a later date.

Donations in memory of Lois may be made to the S.P.C.A. or Canadian Diabetes Association.

Heartfelt thanks to doctors and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt and Janice for the exceptional care, above and beyond to our mother, Lois during her time of need.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.

To the family, and especially Kelly and Jerry – We were so sorry to hear about your mom. It doesn't seem very along ago that she'd have a story about each of you whenever we saw her (usually in the bowling alley). She certainly was proud of her family. Thinking of you all at this time.
