72, Sydney

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Anthony ‘Tony’ Gale on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Sydney, Tony was the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Binns) Gale.

Tony was employed at Sydney Steel for 32 years. He retired in 1992 and enjoyed 22 good years of retirement.

Dad enjoyed nothing more than a good game of cards, and especially cherished his time playing tarabish at the Sydney Steelworker Pensioners Club with all his friends, especially with his card partner, Moe Sullivian.

From an early age Dad took on the role of man of the house and became a father figure to his many siblings with the tragic passing of his Dad. He was also a father figure to many over the years offering support and guidance in their time of need.

Tony was a very proud grandfather and was a faithful spectator at his grandson’s hockey games.

Dad was also involved in politics and served on City Council as alderman of Ward 5 in the former City of Sydney from 1972-1977.

Tony is survived by his wife, Lillian (Tomie); son, Tony (Janna Wentzell), Wolfville; daughter, Rose (Harold MacQuarrie), South Bar, with whom he resided throughout his illness; grandchildren, Bradley, Rebecca and Ainslie; brothers, Tom (Rose), Bedford, Eugene (Theresa), Airdrie, AB, and Terrance (Carol), Fernie, BC; sister, Janet MacLeod, Sydney; as well as several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents,Tony was predeceased by brothers, Edward 'Buster', Alfred 'Jake', Barney and sister, Yvonne (Ling) Crease.

Visitation for the late Anthony ‘Tony’ Gale  will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass, reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Private family interment will take place in new Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier at a later date.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all Doctors involved in dad’s care as well as the staff of the Cancer Centre, Palliative Care and the VON who have provided such professionalism and compassion in their care of Dad. He was truly blessed to be surrounded by such a wonderful team.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Tony can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Care Fund.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.
