Whitney Pier/New Glasgow

It is with heavy hearts, we share with relatives and friends the peaceful passing of Vera Geneva (nee Lawrence) Gibson, 89, on Jan. 26, 2015, at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.

Born in New Glasgow, Vera was the daughter of the late George Lawrence and Maggie Day.

Vera loved music, for she and good friend, Ida were choir directors of the 2nd Baptist Church, New Glasgow, for about 40 years between the both of them. These two ladies were fixtures of the coloured ‘Pleasure Singers’ along with 30 plus ladies who sang in many churches in the county and province of Nova Scotia. Vera will be missed by all who knew her.

Vera is survived by her grandson, Duane Gibson and his wife, Anjanne Bali; great-grandchildren, Dulal and Tajah; stepson, Robert Gibson (Louise); siblings, Ida, Norman (Marion), both from Petawawa, Ont. and Douglas (Donna), Winnipeg; nieces, Marilyn Lawrence, Norma Domey, Lynn Lebréche and Marium Page; nephews, Cecil Robert Lawrence (Esther), Richard, Stephen and Zachery Lawrence, Glenn Lawrence and Sheldon Lawrence.

Besides her parents, Vera was predeceased by her husband, Larry Gibson (2001); sisters, Dora Dorrington, Ida Lawrence, Esther Lawrence and Helen Lawrence; brothers, Everett, Howard and a niece, Patti.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Vera Gibson will be held at St. Phillips African Orthodox Church, Whitney Pier, on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1-2 p.m. with service to follow at 2 p.m. with Archbishop Vincent Waterman officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date.
