73, Sydney

It is with sadness we announce the unexpected passing of George Douglas McPhee on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at home after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Although George’s passing was not cancer related, he was a cancer survivor for over 13 years.

Born in New Waterford, George was the son of the late George Edward and Patricia (Wilson) McPhee.

Family was everything to George. He was a hard worker, for he served in the Navy and later worked for Sydney Steel as an electrician over 30 years before retiring. George was a long time member of Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church. He loved most sports, especially hockey and baseball, for George was a diehard fan of Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Yankees. He enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds, and spending time at the bungalow on the Mira with a good book in his hand. George will be remembered by his family and friends for being determined, strong-willed and most of all, a good provider to his family.

George is survived by his loving wife, Mary Margaret ‘Patsy’ (Dairou) McPhee; children, George McPhee, Sydney, Lori McPhee, Sydney, and Stephen McPhee, Alberta; one special grandson, Lance (Becky) McPhee; brothers, Jim (Connie) Beaver, Keith (Ina) Beaver and Donnie (Laureen) Beaver; sisters, Patricia (Garth) Pierce, Lynn Campbell and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by his father, George McPhee, who died in WWII; mother, Pat Beaver and step-father, Melvin Beaver.

Visitation for the late George Douglas McPhee will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrated the life of George will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Murchison officiating. Following the service, reception will be held in the church hall. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of George may be made to the Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church or charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.
