88, Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our loving mother, grandmother and best friend, Catherine Elizabeth Aucoin on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, in palliative care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Catherine was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (Delaney) MacPhee. She lived most of her life in Whitney Pier.

Family was everything to Catherine. Her faith was strong, for Catherine was a member of Holy Redeemer parish and member of the Catholic Women’s League. She loved travelling, playing cards and the challenges of puzzles. Catherine enjoyed fiddle music, square dances and most of all, spending time with her family. She will be remembered by family and friends for her kindness and generosity given to those without thought or effort. Catherine will be sadly missed and never forgotten by her family and friends.

Catherine is survived by her children, James (Judy) Aucoin, Beverly (Leslie) Slade and Rebecca (Peter Gillis and his daughter, Jillian) Aucoin; three grandchildren, Dorothy (Travis) MacNeil, Susan (Tommy) Mombourquette and Charlotte (Brad) Carew; six great-grandchildren, Bradley and Jessica Mombourquette, Kyle and Haley MacNeil, and Kenzie and Ava Carew; brother, Fred MacPhee; sisters, Annie May McCormick and Dorothy Corbett; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Alex Joe Aucoin; brother, Joe MacPhee and sisters, Margaret Rouleau, Theresa Poirier, Dianne Chiasson and Barbara MacLellan.

Visitation for the late Catherine Elizabeth Aucoin will be held on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Reception will be held in the church by the C.W.L. following the mass.

Interment will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Catherine may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund or Whitney Pier Youth Club

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
