The death of Rev. John A. MacDougall occurred on Aug. 26, 2014, at the Harbourstone Enhance Care Facility, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Whitney Pier on April 14, 1932, John was the son to the late Roderick and Mary (Buchanan) MacDougall.

Fr. John was ordained in 1958 for service in the Diocese of Antigonish. Fr. John was one of “the chosen few”, a group of priests that spread the word of God to those less fortunate in Honduras and Costa Rica. He spent five years in Honduras doing God’s work. Fr. John returned to Cape Breton where he was parish priest in St. Peter’s, North Sydney, Glace Bay, Main-A-Dieu, Baddeck and Ingonish, among other areas. After his retirement, Fr. John continued to serve part-time at various parishes around Sydney.

In his earlier years, Fr. John was an accomplished long distance runner. Sports of all kinds were his passion, but golf, tennis and curling were his favorites. Fr. John also enjoyed a good day on the water, sailing with family and friends. He travelled extensively, spoke fluent Spanish, and the Cuban people were his favourite.

Fr. John will be missed by his family and his numerous friends.

Fr. John MacDougall is survived by his brother, Edward (Margie), Whitney Pier; sister-in-law, Lena, US.A., nieces, Janet and Carla, U.S.A., Joyce, Manila, Philippines and Brenda, Williams Lake, B.C.; nephews, Gordon, Coxheath, Kevin, Ottawa and Trevor, U.S.A., as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. 

Besides his parents, Fr. John was predeceased by his brother, Edmund.

By Fr. John’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Rev. John A. MacDougall will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. The remains will be transferred to Holy Redeemer Church for Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Bishop Brian J. Dunn and priests of the Diocese of Antigonish co-celebrating. Reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, followed by burial in (New) Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rev. John A. MacDougall may be made to charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the healthcare professionals for their love and care especially, those at Waterford Heights and Harbourstone, Kimberly Hall, given to Fr. John during his time of need.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

So sorry to hear of the passing of a wonderful & gentle man. In 1983 Fr. MacDougall married us in Main-A-Dieu, & after him leaving our parish it was always a great pleasure to run into him & catch up. He will always be remembered.
