It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, nanny, mumma, and Gi-Gi, Freda Marie (Bennett) MacDonald Cooke, on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, surrounded by her loving family.  

Born in Glace Bay, Freda was the daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Madore) Bennett.

Family was everything to Freda. She loved singing at karaokes and was a member of the Inspirational Singers, Breton Belles and Memory Lane. Freda enjoyed baking, bowling and most of all, spending time with grand and great-grandchildren. Freda was eagerly waiting the birth of her second great-granddaughter. She will be remembered by her family and friends for being compassionate and kind.

Freda leaves behind her loving children, Gaye (Tracy) Troke, Back Bay, N.B., Gayle (Peter Danaher) O’Connor, Bloomfield, N.B. and Glenda (Carlyle) MacNeil, Lower Washabuck, N.S., with whom she resided; grandchildren, Matthew, Brandon (Dianna), Andrew, Brittany (Rick), Sarabeth (Jarred), Shelbi (Mircea), Chelsey (Aaron), Devin, Mikayla and Cody; great-grandchildren, Olivia Faith and Elijah; twin sister, Fran (Doug); sisters, Debbie (Frank) and Julie; brothers, Ray (Bev) and Wayne (Phyllis); brother in-law, Frank (Joanne); sister in-law, Julieann; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Freda was predeceased by her two husbands, Gordon MacDonald and William Cooke; daughter, Darlene Howell; sister, Gertrude ‘Sis’; brothers, Nelson and Leo; brother in-law, Mark; nieces, Lora, Sharon and special friend, Earl Johnson.

Visitation for the late Freda Marie (Bennett) MacDonald Cooke will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Freda will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the service. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Freda may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society or charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
