81, Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Mary McInnis on Friday, May 2, 2014, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Grand Mira, Mary was the daughter of the late Alexander ‘Sandy’ and Margaret Gillis.

Mom was a woman of great faith. She was a longtime member of St. Theresa’s Parish.  Her greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mom will be remembered fondly by family and friends for her kind and gentle nature.

Mary is survived by her children, Claire (Lawrence) Slaney, Sandy (Kim) McInnis, Bill McInnis, Mary Lou (Scott) Usher and Paul (Paula) McInnis; grandchildren, Katie McInnis, Kristin and Matthew Slaney, Lauren and Danielle Usher, and Kim’s granddaughter, Merissa; sisters-in-law, Kitty and Theresa Gillis, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Louis McInnis, sisters, Margaret, Catherine and Florence and brothers, Johnnie, Danny and Alec.

Mom had fond memories of growing up in Whitney Pier. With this in mind, visitation for the late Mary McInnis will be held today (Monday, May 5, 2014) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at St. Theresa’s Parish Hall. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Send an online condolence.
