80, Whitney Pier

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, Evelyn Mary on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney on May 20, 1933, Mom was the daughter of the late William (Bill) Laughlin and Evelyn Mary Butler.

Mom was also predeceased by her husband, Paul Francis Hollohan in January 1991, son, David Michael in infancy 1955 and brothers, Thomas and Edward Laughlin.

Mom’s family was the center of her life. She lived life to the fullest every day and her heart and home was open to family and friends at all times. Mary was well known by her friends of the “Pier” for her long career at the local grocers, Simon Davids’ and Metro Supermarket. She was an avid tarabish player whose sharp wit and dry sense of humour endeared her to countless people over the years. She spent the last two years of her life at the Cove Guest Home maintaining a high quality of life. Mom was so grateful for the care, attention and wonderful kindness she received from the staff and other residents.

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children, Paul (Margaret) Hollohan, Joe Hollohan, Teddy (Sandra Margetti) Hollohan, Debbie Hollohan, Patty (George) Herridge, Jay (Valerie) Hollohan, Doddy (Bobby) Keel, Dan (Heather) Hollohan, Lalie Hollohan and Karen MacQueen. As well, mom is survived by 28 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Vincent and William, both in Ontario, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation for the late Evelyn Mary Hollohan will be held today (Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception following the mass will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Cove Guest Home.

The family extends a special thank you to Francine Hollohan and Diane Andrews for the continued love and support given to mom throughout the years.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

So you settle down and the children come
And you find a place that you come from
Your wandering is done
And all your dreams of open spaces
You find in your children’s faces
One by one
And all the trips you know you missed
And all the lips you never kissed
Cut through you like a knife
And now you see stretched out before thee
Just another story of a life
For more than all the ghosts of glory
She makes up the story
She’s the only story
Of our life.

Words can not be said for the sadness we feel in our hearts for the loss of an absolute gift, Eve was to everyone who had the pleasure to have met her. As her brother Billy says " She was the Best". And that she was. She was the Best, daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grand mother, and friend anyone could have ever had in their lives. She touched us all in such a positive way. There is no way we could ever forget her in our hearts, and minds. Now she is at her new place beside those who have gone before her. We are so sorry we can not be with you all today. But know we are thinking of you all at this most difficult time. We love you!  Uncle Bill, Aunt Irene, and Cousin John, Julia, and her hubby Ed…
