89, Whitney Pier

Mary (Books) MacDougall passed away peacefully at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay on March 20, 2010. She was 89 years old.

Books was born in Sydney, N.S. on September 8, 1920. She was the loving daughter of the late Captain Steve and Martina (Burgey) MacDonald. She grew up, worked and lived her entire life in her beloved Whitney Pier, surrounded by her family, neighbors and friends.

In 1942, Books graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Glace Bay. Many people will remember Books as she made her house calls administrating to the sick and elderly or weighing the new born babies at the “Well Baby Clinic” in the Pier and in Sydney, as she continued her work with the VON for 22 years. She spent her life time caring for others and her kindness and compassion will live on.

In 1943, Books enlisted in the #12 Royal Canadian Military Nursing Unit and she was in one of the first nursing units to cross the English Channel during World War II. She was proud of the time she served overseas in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany unit 1946.
 
Books has left her children with many memorable memories and stories,. Each year, Remembrance Day was celebrated in style at James Street with many friends and veterans.
 
Books was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer Parish and a lifetime member of the CWL as well as a valued member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier.

Books is survived by her three devoted children, John Allan (Janette), her only daughter, Tina Marie (Curtis) MacNeil and Redmond (Carol Ann). She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, John, Ian, Ells, Cailin, Stephen, Jennie and Redmond. Also left to mourn are her loyal and devoted caregivers from Nfld for the past 7 years, Cassie Farrell and Ruth Deveaux.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Johnny (Flat) MacDougall; her only sister, Rhoda Farrell and three brothers, Albert, Redmond and Everett MacDonald.

Visitation for the late Mrs. Books MacDougall will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Wednesday, Mar. 24 from 2–4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral mass to celebrate Book’s life will be held Thursday, Mar. 25, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow at the Pier Community Funeral Home.  Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at a later date.

Donations in Book’s memory may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund.
