Sydney

It is with profound sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Derek Bruce Legge, who passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the age of 72.

Derek was born on January 28, 1953, in Sydney, and faced his final challenge with courage after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Surrounded by his family, Derek found peace at Hospice Cape Breton, Sydney.

Derek was the beloved son of the late Charles and Sheila Legge.

A man of many talents and a dedicated worker, Derek had a knack for it all. Early in his life, he delivered pizzas, a job that taught him hard work and dedication. He later drove a taxi, was a long-distance trucker and spent time at the steel plant, and was a proud, longtime member of the Local 56 Sheet Metal Union and Local 92 LIUNA Union. Derek showed that no matter the job, there was nothing he couldn’t do.

Five years ago, Derek was given a precious gift of life when he received a lung transplant. This allowed him to spend five more years creating cherished memories with his loved ones.

In his leisure time, Derek was a man who appreciated simple pleasures and good company. He loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays, playing pool with his buddies, and spending time on the Mira River. Some of his fondest memories were at the Mira Waterpark, where he enjoyed games of tarbish or darts surrounded by friends.

Derek will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda Stone, and his daughter, Cara Mulrooney. He also leaves behind his stepson, Danny Cluett (Crystal), and his grandchildren, Leaha Mulrooney (Kalvien), Matt Aubrecht, Kenzie Gordey, and Brayden Cluett. He is survived by his brother, Joe (Margie) and his sisters, Michelle Birch (Kim) and Jade Gallant, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Derek was predeceased by his daughter, Denise Legge; brothers, David and Allen Legge; son-in-law, Patrick Mulrooney; brother-in-law, Kenny Gallant, and nephew, Jeff Legge.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the transplant team at Toronto General Hospital, the medical staff at Halifax Victoria General and Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and the compassionate team at Hospice Cape Breton. Your care for Derek and his family will never be forgotten

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Derek Legge will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd.
