“They say Home isn’t always a place. Sometimes, it’s a person.”
…And Dave was everything a “home” should feel like. Loving and safe. A place to find reassurance and acceptance. A steady hand to help steer your path, and a strong shoulder in times of hardship. He gave his love freely, leaving a legacy of kindness in his wake. The mark of a true gentleman.
Dave leaves behind his adoring wife, Frances, with whom he shared a great and everlasting love. He is cherished by his sons, David (Heidi) and Donnie (Tracy), as well as Frances’s children, Jennifer (Josh) and Kyle, whom Dave embraced as his very own; siblings, Donna (Gunner), Mark, Barbara, Patricia, and Terrence; sisters-in-law, Lena Conway, Kathy House and beloved grandchildren, Mallory, Chelsea, Cody, Nathan, Owen, and his special little girl, Ava. Left to mourn are numerous nieces, nephews, dear friends, and loved ones, especially his cousin, Paul, who was his lifelong sidekick and devoted friend.
Dave was predeceased by his mother, Sarah Marie, and father, Donald J. Floyd; mother-in-law, Cecilia, and father-in-law, Stanley Jockemeck, as well as brother-in-law, Glenn Conway.
Born and raised in Sydney, Dave was a character from the very beginning. His younger years were spent keeping his parents on their toes and becoming the well-known prankster we all came to love. Dave had a passion for sports, which he cultivated during his teenage years. He learned to skate on the rink in his own backyard and came to love baseball while playing in the vacant lot near his childhood home. He played hockey throughout his junior and high school years, eventually moving on to play in the Gentlemen’s League at the Sydney Forum.
Dave chose a career as a pipefitter/plumber and worked many years in the oil sands of Western Canada. He was an upstanding member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters, UA Local #682 and UA Local #488. Known as a well-respected “jack-of-all trades,” there wasn’t anything Dave couldn’t build or fix. He was an avid hunter and carpenter who loved working with his hands. He found great joy in tinkering in his garage and letting his natural skill come to life.
Dave’s greatest joy in life, however, was spending time with family and friends. He and his wife Frances embarked on countless exciting adventures together, some as grand as vacationing in the Caribbean to as simple as a drive through the woods on his ATV. For them, being together was their shared happiness, and it allowed them to create many beautiful memories. Dave became a truly loving Father to her children, Kyle and Jennifer. He taught Kyle to hunt and fish and attended every one of Jennifer’s dance recitals. He was ever-present and ever-loving, stepping into the role of “Father” with great pride. Both are eternally thankful to have had Dave in their lives after losing their own Father at a young age. Dave took great strides to ensure their lives were enriched by the presence of a man who truly loved them as his own.
Dave will be forever missed by his family and the fantastic group of friends he developed over the years. He was a long-time member of the Ashby Legion, Branch 138, and enjoyed spending time there with his buddies. You could usually find him drinking ice-cold Budweiser and cheering for the Maple Leafs. It was a place for him to be truly himself, surrounded by men he loved and respected. Those nights were a source of great happiness and something he always looked forward to.
Special gratitude is extended to Palliative Care Physician Dr. Andrew Giorno, Hospice Physician Dr. Anne Frances D’intino, as well as the entire staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. We thank you for treating Dave with such kindness, grace, and dignity.
In keeping with Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of David Floyd will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 noon with the memorial service to follow at 12 noon in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s honor may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
“And when Death came for you, I hope he whispered,
“Come now, the fight is done.”
And took your hand gently…Like an old friend
Who understood Why you were so tired.
I hope he said: “You’ve carried enough.
Let me hold this weight for you.”
I hope he promised: “Here, there is Quiet.
Here, you may rest.”

I was truly saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. We grew up together in the old neighborhood, playing hockey, and baseball, and generally having the time of our lives as kids do at that age. I have fond memories of Dave and always will cherish those times. So long old friend until we meet again and I see that mischievous grin you always had just before we did something we probably should not have.
