On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Stella Horechuk peacefully passed away at the age of 89 in Sydney.

Originally born in Vovchukhy, Ukraine, Stella immigrated as a child to Canada through Pier 21 in Halifax. Graduating from St. Rita’s School of Nursing at the top of her class, she spent her career as a Registered Nurse and President of the union at MacGillivray Guest Home. As a lifelong member of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Parish in Whitney Pier, she was a dedicated member of the parish community.

Stella is survived by her brothers and sisters, Roman Mulak (Norma), Michael Mulak (Karen), Lodge Mulak (Charlotte), Mary Quinn (Joe) and Leona MacPherson (John); children, Christine MacNeil (Bruce), Michael (Piney), Stephen, and Marie; grandchildren, Marly Somers (Chris), Marika, Nicole, Thomas, Jacob Burt, Bailey Burt, and Nicholas Burt; great-grandchildren, Tate and Leo Somers; as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Stella is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Nicholas Horechuk; parents, Joseph and Tekla Mulak; sister-in-law, Liz Mulak and daughter-in-law, Thelma.

Stella was well known for her generosity, tenacity, wit, deep care of others, and was the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Her biggest joy was spending time with her family, whose biggest joy in turn was spending time with her. Stella will be greatly missed.

Memorial service to celebrate the life of Stella Horechuk will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. with Fr. Volodymyr Perun officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the funeral home. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Garden, Sydney.
