Whitney Pier
April 29, 1963 – July 3, 2025
It is with broken hearts that the family of Michael Derrick Crane, affectionately known as ‘Pickle’, announce his unexpected passing on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
Born in Sydney on April 29, 1963, Mike was the son of the late Marilyn Crane (MacAskill) and Bill Crane. He was a devoted father, proud grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.
Mike was a hardworking and skilled tile setter, proud to have contributed to countless projects across Cape Breton. A long-standing member of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 NS, he took great pride in his trade and will be missed by the many tradespeople he worked alongside throughout the years.
Left to mourn with heavy hearts are his son, Mason Lewis (Ravyn); daughter, Kaitlyn Lewis (Darren); cherished grandchildren, Aurora Elaine and Miley Lynn; stepmother, Mary Crane (MacPhee); brothers, Lorne, and Stephen; sister, Mary Ann (Aldon Snow); uncle, Butch MacAskill; many cousins, extended family members, and other relatives who loved him dearly; as well as close friends, Adam and Cindy, Jimmy and Michelle, and Preston and Tara.
Mike shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Louie, affectionately known as ‘Big Lou’, who brought him comfort, companionship, and countless laughs over the years.
In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by several aunts and uncles.
Mike’s humour, generosity, and warmth touched many lives. The entire neighborhood will fondly remember his generous spirit, especially his willingness to plow countless driveways each winter without ever expecting anything in return. His quiet kindness and willingness to lend a hand made him a truly valued friend and neighbour.
‘His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.’
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Michael Crane will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Thursday, July 10, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will take place in All Faith Garden, Whitney Pier.
