South Bar

August 31, 1940 – May 2, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Michael ‘Mickey’ Melski at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 84. Mickey was the son of the late Anthony and Jennie (Kiec) Melski, formerly of Swan Street in Whitney Pier.

Mickey is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Ursula (Woloszyn) Melski; daughters, Janice and Ursula (David); grandson, Jacob; sister, Anne (Charles) Stephens; brothers, Tony and Robert (Marsha) Melski; in-laws, Elizabeth and Selina Melski, Janek, Ella, Heniek, and Ella Woloszyn; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mickey was predeceased by sister, Leona Hamper; brothers, Terrance, Ronald ‘Butch’, Donnie, and Joseph Melski; sister-in-law, Anna Melski and brother-in-law, James Hamper.

Mickey graduated from St. FX University and dedicated his teaching career to schools in Whitney Pier, retiring from Memorial Junior High. He also took on roles as a scout leader and coached hockey and baseball.

Mickey held a deep pride for his Polish heritage and his community in the Pier. He dedicated his life to studying and promoting his Polish heritage and loved to talk about the many contributions Poland has made throughout history. He visited Poland several times to see his in-laws and explore more of his roots.

Mickey was an avid gardener, loved his music, especially Polish music, and spending summers outdoors on the Bras D’Or with his family. He was also a devoted Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan.

We would like to extend thanks and gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital 4A and ICU units for their care of Mickey in his time of need.

There will be no visitation for the late Michael Melski. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Polish Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Evo DiPierro officiating. A reception will follow at the Polish Village Hall on Victoria Road. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mickey may be made to Hospice Cape Breton or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Michael taught me math at Don Bosco. He was a no nonsense kind of guy which was exactly what I needed at that time in life. He was a Melski from the Pier so I already knew I had to be on my best behaviour. Well I ended up having a 40 year teaching career and Mike comes immediately to mind when I’m asked who were teachers that influenced you? He was sincere in what he did and always did it well. My condolences on his passing.
